New Quiet Study Space

October 12, 2016 by Amanda VerMeulen

The second floor overlooking the river is now an official “Quiet Study Space.”

This change is in response to student feedback on the survey and in focus groups.

Through these methods, we learned that many students come to the library specifically for quiet study spaces. Responses identified the area overlooking the river (officially called the Reeves-Garner Reading Room) as the preferred place to create our first official quiet study space.

The first floor, third floor bean bag room, and group study rooms are still available for group work and other forms of “unquiet” study.

If you have questions about the new quiet study area, please contact Kate Pitcher, Director of the Library, Archives and Media Center.

Author Ram Devineni, co-creator of the graphic novel Priya’s Shakti, will be speaking about the work on Tuesday, April 12 at 4:30 in Cole Cinema.

Priya’s Shakti is about a mortal woman and a goddess who fight gender-based sexual violence in India and around the world.

The college recently purchased panels of the comic which have been indefinitely installed on the second floor of the Library along the long wall with the window seat across from the last row of Stacks shelves.

Additionally, the comic is an open publication, available to read on the web and downloadable to a number of e-readers.

Laptops and Chromebooks Policy Update

February 27, 2016 by Amanda VerMeulen

Student borrowing laptop

Our Laptop and Chromebook Policies Have Changed (effective 2/26/16)

  • All of the laptops and Chromebooks at the SMCM Library are now available for two-week loan. There are no more three-hour loans for these devices.
  • They are now subject to overdue fines of $10.00 per day. If they reach seven days overdue, they will incur a replacement fee of $500.00. This fee will be waived if the device is returned, but any daily overdue fines will remain (i.e., if it is returned 10 days late, there will be a $100.00 fine).
  • If all the devices are checked out, you may place a hold on one using the SMCM Catalog (search for “laptop computer” or “chromebook computer”). The next one that is returned will be placed on the hold shelf for you. You will receive an email notifying you when it arrives and you must pick it up within 24 hours.
  • The devices are not renewable online. If you want to borrow the device again, you must bring it to the circulation desk and we will check it in and immediately check it out to you again. Note that if someone has placed a hold on the device, you will not be able to check it out again.

If you have any questions, comments, or concerns please contact Conrad Helms, Patron Services Librarian, at cahelms@smcm.edu or 240-895-3214.

Wanted: Your Opinion About the Library

September 29, 2015 by Amanda VerMeulen

Listening is an act of love

Image: Love Sign by David Robert Bliwas on Flickr [https://flic.kr/p/4qr6Kw]

Have you ever been in the library and thought, “It sure would be awesome if the library had/was/did [fill in the blank]?” Well, this semester is your chance to share all your brilliant ideas and opinions about the SMCM Library!

ANTH 306 (Principles of Applied Anthropology) is collaborating with the SMCM Library on a research project to understand how students (that’s you!) do research and use the library to create a better library experience for everyone. (YAY!)

Have an opinion? Want to share it? Join a focus group and/or be on the look out for ANTH 306 students tabling outside the Great Room where you can participate in quick exercises looking at different areas in the library and how they are used.

Want more information? Interested in participating in the project? Contact Meghan Lang at mtlang@smcm.edu

JSTOR Daily: For All the JSTOR Fans

April 14, 2015 by Amanda VerMeulen

JSTOR DAILY ON IPADWe know there are die-hard JSTOR fans out there, and apparently, so does JSTOR. In an effort to merge current events with JSTOR-housed scholarship, everyone’s favorite archival scholarly database has created the JSTOR Daily, a magazine that publishes daily blog posts, weekly features, and a biweekly newsletter to “provide the backstory to complex issues of the day.”

It’s an interesting resource that could serve as a source of research ideas for students or even a teaching tool for faculty interested in finding links between news, current events, and academic scholarship. Take a look at some of their recent posts:

  • Is TV for Toddlers Really That Bad?
  • All the Young Dudes: Generic Gender Terms Among Young Women
  • What Role Did Laura Keene Play on Abraham Lincoln’s Last Night?
  • The Erotics of Backgammon

You can learn more about JSTOR Daily, subscribe to their biweekly newsletter, or follow them via RSS Feed, Facebook, or Twitter.

Sámi Pathfinder Visits St. Mary’s

April 14, 2015 by Amanda VerMeulen

Yvonne-Marie Miniggio

Yvonne-Marie Miniggio, Sámi Pathfinder

This Thursday, April 16 at 4:45pm in DPC, you have a truly unique opportunity to learn more about the Sámi people through a talk given by Sámi Pathfinder, Yvonne-Marie Miniggio.

Formerly known as Lapps, the Sámi people are the only European group categorized as indigenous peoples by the UN. The people of this distinct ethnic group live in the extreme north of Norway, Sweden, Finland, and Russia’s Kola Peninsula. They have recently gained standing in Norway’s government through the formation of the Sámi parliament.

Come learn more about the fascinating Sámi culture and language from Yvonne-Marie Miniggio, one of four young people selected by the Norwegian government to promote Sámi history and culture, and raise awareness of modern Sámi society.

Her visit is a joint effort of the Center for the Study of Democracy and librarian Kent Randell.
