Borrow Items
The following individuals are eligible to borrow materials from the St. Mary’s Library:
- St. Mary’s students, staff and faculty
- St. Mary’s alumni
- St. Mary’s, Calvert, and Charles County residents
- USMAI students, faculty and staff
These groups of library users each have different borrowing privileges for the following materials:
- Books
St. Mary’s students, staff, and alumni; tri-county residents; and USMAI researchers may borrow books for a 28 day period. Books checked out to faculty are due back either on May 1st or December 1st (depending on when they were checked out during the academic year).
- Movies and Music
DVDs and CDs are loaned to all library users for 7 days. VHS tapes and LPs are loaned to all library users for 3 days. Faculty may reserve a film for in-class viewing by submitting a Film Reservation Request. - Laptops and Chromebooks
Only current St. Mary’s students may borrow laptops and Chromebooks. All laptops and Chromebooks are first come first serve at the Circulation Desk and available for a 2-week loan period. Laptops and Chromebooks cannot be renewed online. There is a daily overdue fine of $10.00 per day. After seven days overdue there is a “lost” fee of $500.
- Kindles
St. Mary’s students, faculty, and staff may borrow any of the 6 Kindles loaded with popular fiction and non-fiction books. There are 2 Kindle Paperwhites, 3 Kindle Fires, and 1 Kindle Touch. - Electronic Peripherals
St. Mary’s students, faculty, staff, and alumni tri-county residents; and USMAI researchers may borrow the following items for a 6-hour loan period: Extension cords, headphones, flash drives, external DVD drives, ethernet cables, laptop chargers, and floppy disc drives (yes, we mean that). - Course Reserves
St. Mary’s students may borrow materials on physical or e-reserve for their respective courses. Loan periods for vary, and can be either 3 hours, overnight, or 3 days, as determined by the course instructor. To find out what an instructor has placed on reserve, search the Course Reserves collection online. - Other
Current St. Mary’s students may borrow dry erase markers and erasers, calculators, and colored pencils.
Returning Items
St. Mary’s students, staff and faculty do not incur overdue fines from returning library materials past their due date. You can learn more by reading the Library’s (No) Overdue Fines Policy.
Books, DVDs and CDs may be returned to the Library’s Circulation Desk or, outside of normal library operating hours, to the Library’s Book Drop. All electronic peripherals, course reserves and group study room materials must be returned to the Library’s Circulation Desk
Renew Items
St. Mary’s students, faculty, staff, and USMAI researchers may renew library material loans online through their Library Account or in person at the St. Mary’s Library Circulation Desk.
Request Items
St. Mary’s students, faculty, staff may request items from other USMAI libraries through the Library’s online USMAI request feature. Items from non-USMAI libraries may be requested using Interlibrary Loan.
