St. Mary’s Alumni, Pre-1940

Started in April 2013, this list of St. Mary’s Alumni, Pre-1940 is an ongoing project to assist researchers and genealogists. After the fire that burned Calvert Hall in 1924, many records were lost. This list is, by no means, complete. At times, information has been gathered from additional resources within the St. Mary’s College of Maryland archive, such as graduation programs and the 1925 yearbook. In cases where graduation is not known (or did not occur), the latest year is included, with an -f, -s, -j, -sr indicating Freshman, Sophomore, Junior, or Senior. This list includes all known individuals who attended St. Mary’s Seminary and St. Mary’s Junior College (not just graduates).

This list was created by Kent Randell.

Milburn, Susan Mary Howard, Leonard Joseph, 30 Aug. 1859 [lr] 1846 – orig. class [Fausz]; 1850 (attended) St. Mary’s Co.; Baltimore, Md.
p. 37, Fausz; Sep. 1850 Census; An alumni directory has her graduation date as 1859, but this is an error, as the graduation date was certainly in the mid-1850s; In the late 1870s the family moved to Baltimore and shortly thereafter, Leonard, who was the first mate on the steamboat “Express” drowned October 23, 1878 in the Chesapeake Bay during a hurricane. He and 15 others, many from St. Mary’s County, were lost. “November 4, 1878, Baltimore Sun: The body of Mr. L. J. Howard was yesterday brought to Baltimore.. and was taken to his late home on Fremont street, preparatory to burial. After being washed ashore the body had been temporarily interred near where it was found.” [lr]; b. 11 April 1836, dau. of John Lewis and Ann Elizabeth (Thomas) Milburn [lr]; d. 16 July 1901 [lr]

Sothoron, Margaret Hollyday Compton, Barnes, 27 October 1858 [lr] 1850 (attended) St. Mary’s Co.
Listed in Sep. 1850 Census; Her father, Col. J.H. Sothoron, and her brother Webster, were involved in a fatal conflict with Lt. Eben White of the Union Army on October 19, 1863. Lt. White went to the Sothoron’s plantation, named The Plains, to enlist his slaves, and an argument ensued which resulted in the death of Lt. White. The Col and his son escaped to Richmond, Virginia across the Potomac while the mother and children (including seminarian Margaret H. Sothoron) were placed under house arrest, a situation mentioned in a letter written by President Lincoln, who wrote: “It is represented that the family [Sothoron] are substantially imprisoned in their house by our soldiers and are on starvation. I submit that perhaps some attention better be given to the case.” Lincoln again wrote in March 1864 that, “Why can they not occupy their old home and excite much less opposition to the government than the manifestation of their distress is now doing?” In September 1865, Mrs. Sothoron wrote to President Johnson as follows: “Suffer me to impose upon your notice in behalf of myself and my seven suffering innocent and unoffending children. I have observed your magnanimous pardon to prominent Rebels in the Border States, the Army, and Navy and amnesty to all. I see no reason by the same should be denied me and my helpless family…. For months I was guarded by the military. A part of the time held as a prisoner in my own house. I received all kinds of taunts and indignities, was not allowed even the necessaries of life. I lived upon the bounty of my neighbors. Knowing there was no cause for deserting my home and having none other to seek, I bore all uncomplainingly… I was left without a living soul to provide me even a stick of wood, but for the timely succor of friends I know not what would have been my fate…. Everything has been taken from me [and] to give you all the particulars would be beyond the limits of a letter. For nearly two years I have been a homeless wanderer without means of support, my children suffered and living upon the charity of the world and my life a living death.” Col. Sothoron at this time had fled to Canada. Barnes Compton (the husband of this early seminarian) interceded and by February of 1866 and the family was allowed to return to the Estate. On November 27, 1866, Col. John H. Sothoron was indicted by the Grand Jury of St. Mary’s County for manslaughter in the death of Lt. Eben White, and having received a trial in a County where many were partial to the Confederacy, was found innocent. Col. Southoron unsuccesfully petitioned the government for reimubursement of losses for property lost as a result of the Second Confiscation Act. [source: http://userpages.umbc.edu/~pdavis2/Participants/dawsonm/smc/articles_files/april_plantations.htm, viewed 23 Oct. 2014]; Barnes Compton attended Charlotte Hall Military Academy; graduated from Princeton College in 1851; elected to MD House of Delegates in 1859, again in 1867 and 1869; during the Civil War he fled to Virginia for two years and returned after Lincoln was assassinated–he was arrested and imprisoned at the Old Capitol in Washington [source: Doctors of St. Mary’s County by Margaret Fresco]; b. 1838, dau. of Col. John H. and Elizabeth Magruder (Somervell) Sothoron [lr]; d. 12 June 1900, Laurel, Md. [lr]
