End of Semester Countdown

December 11, 2013 by Melissa Rushing

It’s that time of year again: The extension cords are all checked out, the coffee is flowing, and suddenly anyone speaking above a whisper in the library is TOO LOUD!!!!! With only a few days of classes left and final exams looming on the horizon, the library is here for you.

You can find our Final Exam week (and Winter Break) hours online, but essentially we’re open until 2 a.m. Sunday, Dec. 15 – Wednesday, Dec. 18. As always, librarians are around to help with any last-minute research assignments, and all of our e-books and online databases are available 24/7. If you come by for some last minute studying, you might even find a certain library director whose name rhymes with Shmelia handing our power snacks and goodies when you least expect it. Don’t say we didn’t warn you.

The Library Tour

August 21, 2013 by Melissa Rushing

Dove in the window seatA tour is a great way to get to know the library and the people who work here. I took one of the college’s newest residents, Dove, on a tour this summer. He got to see one of our new spaces, the browsable DVD collection, and tried out some technology. Being a 21st century bear he opted for the scanner rather than the copy machine, but couldn’t resist the record player. Dove also checked out his first book, got help with some research and found pretty much every comfortable napping study spot available. You can see Dove’s full tour on our Facebook page.

Baby, It’s Cold in Here . . . or is that Hot??

December 11, 2012 by Melissa Rushing

Some of you may remember last Monday, December 3.  You know, the day it was about 90 degrees in the library?  It was HOT.  And everyone was complaining.  One of the college HVAC mechanics came over, tinkered around a bit, and we finally got the temperatures down.

Fast forward to Friday, December 7.  Yes, a mere four days later.  You, the day it was about 65 degrees in the library??  It was COLD.  And everyone was complaining.  One of the college HVAC mechanics came over, tinkered around a bit, and . . . NOTHING MUCH HAPPENED.

We don’t know exactly what happened.  The library is actually two buildings connected with the bridge.  There are lots of thermostats.  There are lots of heating registers and air vents in the ceilings.  It all seems pretty complicated.

What we do know is that people were pretty uncomfortable, and frustrated, and mad.  And I apologize for that.  Our staff were cold, librarians were cold, and students trying to work were cold.  Today everything seems better.  I hope it stays that way this week, and we’ll try to start the new year with steady temperatures that don’t required fingerless gloves and a parka (or a tank top and shorts).

Happy end of the semester.  Happy holidays, sleeping in, and time with family.  We’ll see you next semester.
