Overdue Fines

Student returning library books

(No) Overdue Fines

The St. Mary’s College of Maryland Library does not charge overdue fines on most of our own items.

Things that do not receive overdue fines include:

  • Books
  • Audiovisual materials (CDs, DVDs, etc.)
  • Course reserve items
  • Equipment loaned from the circulation desk (headphones, chargers, extension cords, etc.)

Things that do receive overdue fines include:

  • Chromebooks
  • Items that have been recalled and are not returned by the new due-date, i.e., if a St. Mary’s Library item ordinarily not subject to overdue fines — such as a book — is recalled and then returned late, an overdue fine will accrue

If any item — regardless of whether or not it is subject to overdue fines — is more than 45 days overdue (less for some types of materials), it is considered “lost” and a replacement fee is billed to the patron. The amount varies depending on the type of material, but may start at $100.00. This replacement fee is rescinded if and when the item is returned or replaced. If the patron wishes to replace the item, they must first contact Melissa Johnson, Customer Service Supervisor, at majohnson2@smcm.edu or (240) 895-3214 to obtain pre-approval for a replacement. Replacement items submitted without pre-approval will not be accepted. Replacement of the item must occur within one year of billing.

Our fines policies apply to all St. Mary’s College of Maryland library users, including USMAI borrowers and local patrons.

Questions or concerns about library fines may be directed to Melissa Johnson, Customer Service Supervisor, at majohnson2@smcm.edu or (240) 895-3214.

USMAI Materials

As of January 1, 2022, general circulating books from all USMAI Libraries do not accrue overdue fines. Overdue fines for other types of materials, and replacement fees for books more than 45 days overdue, are assessed according to the terms of the owning institution.

Interlibrary Loan Materials

Books borrowed through Interlibrary Loan are always loaned according to the terms of the owning institution. Any item borrowed from another library may be subject to overdue fines if returned late. Inquiries about fines incurred on Interlibrary Loan materials may be directed to Brenda Rodgers at blrodgers@smcm.edu or (240) 895-4437.
